Fellow Anglers,

Here is the latest on all the action from Ecuador which included Galapagos Island, Manta, Esmeraldas and also what is happening in Peru. The blue and black marlin have shown up in Galapagos this March in large sizes. Year after year March and April are becoming the absolute best months to target huge blue and black marlin in the 500 – 900 lb range. Ecuagringo tries to keep you updated weekly no matter how good or poor the fishing is.

Ecuador:

San Cristobal-Galapagos Islands

March 20, 2017On the Hook fished Rosa Blanca Banks and found some striped marlin action on the spot named the Honey Hole. Captain Gus raised 5 striped marlin had 3 bites and released two nice stripeys with anglers from Argentina. Jhonamar 2 reported releasing a nice blue marlin around 650# and a striped marlin on 0-30 Bank plus a couple of nice big eye tuna.

March 21, 2017On the Hook fished 0-30 Bank looking to raise a blue or black marlin. They caught several big eye tuna around 50# by mid day. In the afternoon they released a nice striped marlin and lost a black estimated around 600# that spit the hook after 10 minutes and some nice jumps not far from the boat.

March 22, 2017On the Hook returned to Rosa Blanca and raised 2 striped marlin and did not release any. They caught a big eye tuna around 80# and a nice mahi mahi about 25#. Water temp was reported 82-83 F which tends to turn the striped marlin bite down in Galapagos.

March 23, 2017– Last day fishing On the Hook with group from Argentina. They fished Rosa Blanca Banks and only raised a striped marlin that did not bite and saw 3 more tailing. Water continues to be around 82 F.

March 25, 2017Jhonamar 2 reported no marlin action on 0-30 Bank and only caught a nice mahi mahi about 40#. Water was 83 F.

March 26, 2017Jhonamar 2 fished McGowen Reef and caught 13 big eye tunas from 10 to 65#. A nice wahoo about 45# would make for a good dinner. The tuna were thick on the surface and the anglers caught fish casting poppers. Bonitos were heavy too and made fund for multiple catches on light tackle.

Manta

March 22 to 25, 2017– most pangas reporting 0-3 raises of striped marlin and very few blue marlin. Water currents were pushing North and bait was absent. Fishing was particularly slow compared to the previous week with incredible raises of blues and striped marlin.

March 26-28, 2017– pangas reported some action in some areas with several boats raising up to 3 marlin. Some striped marlin raised and caught but no boats raised more than 3 marlin. Current began turning South and more bait showed up but water has remained green closer to shore. Most fishermen are catching giant Humboldt squid.

Esmeraldas

March 22, 2017– the fishing onboard Antipatico reported some action from sailfish going 3/5 and raised 2 blue marlin which did not stay hooked. Current and bait was not the best.

March 25, 2017Antipatico headed out Northwest 40 miles. They found good action from blue marlin in the morning raising 6 blues and releasing 3. Fish were around 300#. In the afternoon the bite was slow but fishing their way in they hooked a nice striped marlin and released it reported around 220#

March 29, 2017Antipatico received a report from local fishermen that there were lots of bonito South of Punta Galera and about 15 miles out the previous day. The fished the area and found schools of bonito holding from 15 to 18 miles offshore. After trolling several hours around the schools of bonito they raised a sailfish. They were hoping for a black marlin which are said to be notorious in this area when conditions are right. Close to mid day when it was looking like the black lady would not show they raised a black marlin on the right short. The fish ate a large Moldcraft and put up a fight for almost two hours. They finally released a nice black estimated around 700#.

Peru:

The rains continue to pound Peru like they haven’t in 50 years. Is this a sign of things to change? Maybe but in the meantime here is the local report on the fishing.

March 27, 2017– our research panga fishing near the gas rigs out of Cabo Blanco caught several tuna and bonito with largest fish around 50#. Lost of bait and greenish water reported. No billfish found but most of the area covered was between 3 and 8 miles offshore.

March 28, 2017– The research panga went out to fish Mancora Bank and further offshore around 30 to 38 miles. On Mancora Bank the found big eye tuna and raised 4 striped marlin. As they headed about two miles off West of the bank they raised and lost a nice blue marlin estimated around 400#.
