Fellow Anglers,

If you have not made the Galapagos or any destination in Ecuador next on your list then you are missing out on fantastic fishing and the travel experience of a lifetime. Tired of the same destinations where you are fishing with dozens of boats daily? How about being the only boat on the water? Want to take the family on an exotic and safe adventure? Consider the Galapagos Islands before anywhere else. The country of Ecuador is not only home to the Galapagos Islands but also host Manta and Esmeraldas which produce some of the best marlin action on the planet.

San Cristobal-Galapagos Islands:

Waters continue to be extremely warm for the area averaging 82F all around the islands. The abundance of tuna and some large blue and black marlin have made things interesting.

April 16, 2017– On the Hook fished Rosa Blanca with a group from Argentina. They released 2 striped marlin out of 3 bites in the morning. Around 2 pm they hooked a nice blue marlin about 450 lbs and released it after about 40 minutes.

April 17, 2017– On the Hook fished for tuna out of Espanola Island and went 13 for 27 on big eye tuna ranging from 20 to 65 lbs. They also landed a couple of nice wahoo over 50 lbs. Argentina anglers were happy to cast poppers at surface feeding tuna.

April 18, 2017– On the Hook targeted tuna again out of Espanola Island going 9 for 16 on big eye with one fish over 80 lbs. They also caught a three nice groupers jigging.

April 19, 2017– On the Hook fishing Punta Pitt found lots of skipjack tuna but the morning was slow. After serving lunch they found themselves scrambling as two marlin came into the spread. They hooked a blue and a striped marlin almost simultaneously. The striped marlin spit the hook after a few jumps. The blue fought on for a release 1 hour later of a fish estimated around 650 lbs. Around 2:45 PM a very large fish pilled on the port bridge teaser. The crew tried to get a bait to the fish but it would not eat and only seemed to want the teaser before fading. It was believed to be a large black marlin but they size estimate was difficult.

April 20, 2017– On the Hook returned to Punta Pitt to fish the same area of action as the previous day. There was plenty of life but the marlin bite was slower in the morning so they went to the Barcasa reef to fish for wahoo and tuna. They caught 3 nice wahoo around 40 lbs trolling and then cast poppers to catch 4 nice big eye tuna around 30 lbs ending the day with fun rod bending.

Manta-Ecuador:

Manta generally tends to peak end of April and May. But the fishing has been quite strong about 3 weeks out of 4 on average every month this years.

April 18, 2017– Several pangas reported lots of green water so they had to trade 55 miles out to find the blue water. most pandas averaged raising 2 to 5 striped marlin with a few blue marlin mixed in.

April 19, 2017– Waters and current began to change pushing the green water further South to Salinas and Peru. Some marlin reported 35 miles out with panga Teofilo going 3/7 on blue marlin and Mi Pana 2/4 on blue marlin including a nice fish around 850 lbs.

April 20, 2017– Miura had a group that wanted to jig for grouper and jacks. They caught 8 almaco jacks ranging from 10 to 30 lbs and three very nice broadtail groupers from 12 to 25 lbs. The panga Mi Pana fishing 40 miles Northwest went 2/5 on blue marlin and 1/2 on striped marlin.

Esmeraldas-Ecuador:

Ecuagringo has teamed up with a local artisanal fisherman who has a 27 foot skiff that targets tuna and wahoo mainly but has agreed to provide reports in exchange for fuel to search for black marlin. We have provided the necessary tackle, rod holder and should be getting more reports soon.

April 15, 2017– Antipatico fishing its last few days while in Esmeraldas had a enjoyable day fishing South West of Punta Galera 28 miles. They raised 5 sailfish at one time and managed to release 2. Around mid day they had a double of striped marlin and went 1/2 on the stripeys. A big bull dorado about 55lbs was next and shortly after they a blue about 600 lb bite and break the line. Trolling their way in they hooked a black marlin about 400 lbs about 13 miles out and released it.

April 16, 2017– Antipatico provided us its last report before heading back home to Colombia. They fished 25-30 miles out West of Punta Galera. They went 2/5 on blue marlin and 3/4 on striped marlin.

April 18, 2017– Panga Tortuga while fishing the 12 mile zone caught a couple of nice big eye tunas 120 and 142lbs. They fished the acres of skimming skipjacks and managed to hook and release a nice black marlin estimated around 500 lbs.

Peru:

Cabo Blanco:

The rains continue to pound North Peru. Lots of chlorophyll and green water make it difficult to fins billfish close to shore. We are waiting for rains to subside and will continue our research fishing and hopefully have more to report soon.
