As the Galapagos Islands come into their prime fishing season we are happy to say that the 2019 marlin bite never quit. Offseason in many ways was almost as good as the prime season this year. Now with December starting the topwater yellowfin tuna bite is on fire.
Wahoo bites are reported to average over a dozen fish a day and the striped marlin bite is in the double digits. We have several charters starting this week and all next week to add to the valuable on location information. Here is a summary of what has been happening:
San Cristobal Island
December 6 – 9, 2020: Local artisanal boats have been reporting plenty of striped marlin action on Española Banks with lots of birds, tuna, dolphins and sea lions seen feeding on schools of sardines and of course striped marlin. Local artisanal fishermen have been seeing dozens of tailing striped marlin on the bank and marlin feeding frenzies.
None of our sport fishers were out last week as we were are finalizing maintenance so we do not have raise stats but it is good to know the fish are visible on the bank which usually means there are plenty there.
Yellowfin tuna & wahoo:
December 7-8: Local skiffs fishing for tuna reported catching 25 to 40 tuna per boat daily in the 25 to 80 pound range. They trolled feathers and saw fish feeding on flying fish and sardines on the surface of MacGowen Reef.
The fish are being caught in 60 to 200 feet of water. Ideal scenario for anglers wanting to fish topwater. Over a dozen wahoo bites have been reported daily around the same reef while targeting tuna. Most wahoo caught averaged 30 to 45 pounds.
Folks if you are looking to fish some of the most complete and action packed waters in the world then you need to book your trip now. Limited available dates are still left for 2020 season so don’t be left out.
