Thanks to El Niño Event waters continue to be 76 to 79 F all around the Galapagos. Striped marlin numbers continue to be high and locals are reporting blue marlin and some black marlin mixed with yellowfin tuna.
San Cristobal Island
Since August seems to be a back to school month for anglers with kids bookings are usually slow. However, Ecuagringo is the only outfitter since we started the fishery to send our crews out on pangas to check out the fishing. The results were pretty good.
August 11, 2023– Captain Julio went to Rosa Blanca Bank and fished two rods trolling lures. He raised and impressive 31 striped marlin had 18 bites and released 9 striped marlin. Considering only captain and his son on boat they tired and quit by 2 pm.
Isabela Island
The waters are incredible with reports of lots of bonito and yellowfin tuna last 3 weeks. Mate Oscar went tuna fishing and shared reports.
August 10, 2023– Mate Oscar took his panga to fish 13 miles Southwest of Puerto Villamil. Searching for tuna he found acres of bonito and yellowfin with excellent conditions. He reported catching 9 yellowfins 20 to 50 pounds and 8 bonito. 2 swordfish were seen tailing and he was able to take one with harpoon about 200 pounds.
August 11, 2023– Oscar returned to the same area and brought a couple 80#s as per our request. Not long into the troll he hook and released a blue he estimated around 550#. He went on to catch 7 nice yellowfin tuna and late in the afternoon he hooked into a large black marlin estimated over 700# that spit the hook.
Peru
August 13, 2023– Artesanal fishermen in Norther, Peru reported going 1/2 on black marlin fishing from their artesanal boat. They caught the smaller of two black marlin and lost the bigger one. Conditions in Northern, Peru including Cabo Blanco are very similar thanks to El Niño event as they were in the 50’s during Glassell’s famous giant black marlin catches.
