Beautiful sunny weather and flat calm seas continue as we fished Feb 19 and 20, 2013 on the Vertigo with Mike Eakins and Tom Noohnan
On Feb 19, we headed for Bank 90 and Floreana. We saw plenty of small tuna but where looking for a blue marlin. About mid day amongst the tuna we had two outrigger knockdowns that seemed much like a billfish bite from the slashing water. The rest of the day went uneventful.
Feb 20– we headed for 0-30 bank looking for striped marlin. Around 10:00 in the morning we saw a blue around 500 plus jump 40 yards from the boat which encouraged us to switch to blue marlin tactics. Next we put larger teasers out, placed lures and bumped the speed to 9-10 knots. Not long after we raised a big marlin in the spread which I did not get a good read on but was probably a blue from the size of its wake and dark colors.
Another marlin was seen jumping before mid day next to the boat. At 14:02 a nice blue of 600 plus came into the spread on a bridge teaser. While Mike tried to pitch a tuna belly strip to it the fish nailed a Iland white and pink hair lure and the fight was on. 30 minutes later the fish was less than 20 yards from the boat and it spit the hook.
