January ended its last week of fishing with some notable catches in different destinations. Read our complete report so you can judge the fishing for yourself. Ecuador:
San Cristobal, Galapagos Islands
The striped marlin bite continues to be slow on the East side of San Cristobal Island. Rosa Blanca and Espanola Banks had very little bait and life. The West side showed more promise with action from striped, blue and black marlin. There were big eye tunas on McGowen Reef and Hancock Bank.
Jan 25, 2017 – Mates Tonino & Cirilo went fishing on a panga for tuna around Macgowen Reef hooked a black marlin around 1 pm in less than 120 feet of water. He fought the fish on a 50# standup until 7 pm and decided to cut the line. He was not search for marlin but rather tuna. The black marlin was estimated at over 900#.
Jan 26, 2017 – Mates Julio & Ronnie fishing onboard panga Ericka went searching for tuna on spinning reels and poppers near Punta Pitt. The reported 6 big eye tunas averaging 35 to 55# and one almaco jack of 40#. They ended the day closer to port jigging for grouper and managed to catch 4 Galapagos groupers averaging 10 to 15#
Jan 28, 2017 – Jhonamar 2 captained by Fernando Yepez fished Rosa Blanca Bank. There was no bait or much life reported on the bank. They raised 1 striped marlin around mid day that spit the hook. The day ended with a double of big eye tuna estimated at 50#. Water color was greenish/blue and temperature was 81 F.
Jan 31, 2017 – Mates Julio & Ronnie fished Espanola Banks and near the island looking for tuna. They raised no marlin and managed to catch a couple of small big eye tuna. Water was not the best color and temperature was 81 F
Manta
The blue marlin bite has been further out the past week. Action has been a bit slower the last two weeks but there are fish to be found.
Jan 25, 2017 – Miura captained by Andres Calero fished Northwest of Manta 45 miles. He raised two blue marlin and released 1 estimated around 350#. He caught two large dorado around 40#. Flying fish were seen and blue water. Panga Don Tiofilo fishing 55 miles out went 1/2 on blue marlin.
Jan 26, 2017 – Miura again with Captain Calero fish further South out at the 35 miles mark going 1/2 striped marlin and loosing a nice blue estimated around 500#. Panga Panita went 1/1 on blue marlin.
Jan 27, 2017 – Miura ran 55-60 miles Northwest trying luck and was rewarded with 2/3 on blue marlin. Nice blue water and a large dorado of 55#. Don Tiofilo fishing 35 miles out went 1/4 on striped marlin.
Salinas
January is usually a good month in Salinas but so far 2017 has been up and down after a very strong close of 2016.
Jan 26, 2017 – Joshua reported going 3/5 on striped marlin and a large wahoo over 80#.
Jan 27, 2017 – Joshua went 0/2 on striped marlin and caught a large dorado and a wahoo.
Peru:
Our research panga continues to test the waters off Cabo Blanco and the gas platforms that lay offshore. The tuna bite has been reported by the artesanal fleet to be quite good with yellowfin and big eyes averaging 50 to 75#.
Cabo Blanco
Jan 27, 2017 – Ecuagringo research panga fish around one of the gas platforms and raised a blue marlin while fishing for tuna. The blue took a lure and spit the hook after a few jumps. The crew caught a nice bag of yellowfin and big eyes.
