Peru Marlin & Tuna Report | Ecuagringo

Fellow Anglers:

As our destinations grow in number and we get more news on what is happening in certain areas we will sometimes bring out a flash report focusing on one destination. Our weekly general fishing reports will continue on all the information we have for Ecuador, Galapagos and Peru. This report is about Cabo Blanco,Peru. We want to bring more attention to this unique tuna fishery especially for anglers looking to use light tackle. Many of you want to know about the marlin bite.

Cabo Blanco-Peru

Thanks to Diego Salazar a local from Northern Peru who has been instrumental lately in helping us gather reports and information on what the local artesanal fleet is doing. This time of year there is very little wind and most artesanal boats are still using sails when fishing. They do not go more that 5 or 6 miles offshore as it would take them a long time to get back. These boats have been targeting tuna near the platforms and talk about a mixed bag of big eyes and large bonita most days. Theres seems to be a good amount of sardines. They do not target marlin openly as there is a law in place against killing marlin. However, several artesanal boats did report spotting several large marlin swimming around the platforms. One fisherman claimed seeing a fish estimated over 800# tailing on the surface. We do not know details if these were blue or black marlin but from Feb 19 to 23, 2017 five out of ten boats reported seeing a total of 6 large marlin swimming on the surface. Waters were calm making sighting life on the water easier. The marlin were not targeted as the fishermen were searching for tuna.
