Marlin & Tuna Report, April 30 to May 5, 2017 | Ecuagringo

Fellow Anglers,

May has started out really well with fantastic fishing for marlin and tuna in several of our destinations. Nice weather all around has also been a plus. If you are looking for godo weather, off the wall destinations, wild places and great fishing then forget about Central America and fly the extra hour or two to South America.

Ecuador:

Manta

Manta had an up and down month of April with some very good days and a few slow days. May exploded with fantastic fishing for dorado, striped marlin and blue marlin. The bottom fishing action has been pretty good with broom tail grouper and snapper.

April 30, 2017– Miura fished the morning searching for marlin 30 miles out with no luck. By mid day captain Calero ran inshore to fish the reefs. He caught a couple of nice broomtail grouper and snappers. Not much marlin action was reported and no pangas went out.

May 1, 2017– Miura fished the reefs closer to shore doing a some jigging and caught some nice almaco jacks and groupers. Panga Teofilo reported 1 blue marlin and 1 striped marlin fishing 40 miles Northwest of Manta. Panga Toribio caught a black marlin estimated 350# while fishing the cobia cages for wahoo 8 miles out.

May 2, 2017– Miura, captain Andres Calero and good friend “Fat Daniel” fished the reefs inshore first catching some snapper and jacks before heading offshore to try their luck for marlin. They caught 12 mahi-mahi with one 43# and the other 41#. They spotted a total of 12 striped marlin tailing raised 5 in the spread and had 2 bites. Miura fished as far as 18 miles from port. Atomic fishing 25 miles out reported raising 3 blue marlin and 2 striped marlin releasing a blue and a striped marlin. Panga Mi Pana reported going 2/4 on blue marlin. Panga Jaimito caught 1 striped marlin and raised 3 blue marlin and missed all of them.

May 3, 2017– Miura went 25 miles out in search of marlin. They saw 4 tailing striped marlin that would not eat. While fishing next to several boats they just did not have any luck with blue marlin but caught 5 nice mahi-mahi. Atomic went 2/5 on blue marlin fishing close to Miura. Panga Electrico went 2/3 on blue marlin. Panga Panita went 1/1 on striped marlin an 0/2 on blue marlin. Panga Jaimito went 1/3 on blue marlin fishing the same area as Miura.

May 4, 2017– The blue marlin bite broke loose 25 miles out. Miura went 3/7 on blue marlin. Atomic reported 1/4 on blue marlin. Mi Luna went 1/2 blue marlin and 3 dorado over 25#. Panga Hijo de Pepe went 4/7 including on blue marlin including 1 over 700 released. Panga Teofilo raised 9 blue marlin, had 7 bites, broke 4 off and caught 1! Panga Panita raised 2 striped marlin and caught none. Panga Albacorita 2 went 1/4 on blue marlin with nice fish around 600#. Panga Pepe went 2/7 on blue marlin and 1/2 on striped marlin. Panga Estrella del Sur did not raise any fish.

May 5, 2017– The bite continues in Manta with pangas reporting 3 to 10 raises of mostly blue marlin. Panga Panita brought in a nice blue around 650# and lost 4 more. Panga Jaimito went 3/5 on blue marlin and 1/1 on striped marlin. Panga Mi Pana caught a black marlin around 500# and went 2/3 on blue marlin. Albacorita 2 fishing a bit further South than the rest had and incredible day raising 11 blue marlin and going 6/9 on bites with two fish estimated just over 500#.

San Cristobal Island

April 30, 2017– On the Hook fished Espanola Banks. Water had cooled to 78 F and they saw over 15 striped marlin tailing and raised 8. They had 6 bites and released 3. Three nice big eye tuna around 50# were caught as well.

May 1, 2017– On the Hook fished Espanola Banks with guest from Argentina and raised 5 striped marlin had 3 bites and caught 1. A nice black about 600# was released after about almost a 2 hour fight. Jhonamar 2 fished Punta Pitt and went 1/2 on blue marlin. The blue released was around 400# and the a second fish that broke the line on a jump was estimated over 800#.

May 2, 2017– On the Hook went to Espanola Banks again and the big eye tuna were pretty thick with birds feeding on the surface. They caught 11 big eyes from 25 to 65# but raised no marlin. Jhonamar 2 fished Punta Pitt again and reported hooking a large tuna that fought for over 2 hours before hook pulled. Galapagos is known for big eye tuna that will push 400#. They ended the day with 5 nice skipjack tuna and a yellowfin around 75#.

May 3, 2017– On the Hook fished 0-30 Bank raising 2 striped marlin but could not catch any. By mid day a large blue estimated over 600# came in the spread but did not eat. Jhonamar 2 fished Punta Pitt and released a striped marlin and a blue around 400#. They also caught a big eye about 85# out of a triple bite of tuna.

May 4, 2017– a large mass of very warm water about 83 F moved in. On the Hook fished Punta Pitt and raised a black marlin about 10:15 AM estimated around 500# but lost it on a jump. Water conditions were beautiful but nothing more to report the rest of the day.

Peru

Cabo Blanco

Water conditions have cooled quite a bit and the rains have decreased significantly.

May 3, 2017– Our research panga fished Mancora Bank about 35 miles from the coast. They found birds and dolphins on the bank. About 10 striped marlin tailing were spotted all day but not very hungry. They raised 4 striped marlin from under and released 2. A few skipjack tuna were caught as well.
