It was while comparing and studying little birds called finches that Darwin noticed differences in their bill structure and feeding habits. These subtle differences were compared to finches on mainland South America. Darwin concluded that birds and animals evolve over time to adapt to changing habitats. Evolution was the key to survival and thus Darwin’s controversial Origin of the Species idea was put into print.

San Cristobal Island
Once you fly into the airport of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, just a 3 minute cab ride on the outskirts of town, you will be in a different world. Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is the capital of the Galapagos Islands Province and is located on San Cristobal Island. San Cristobal is the most Eastern island in the Archipelago. Many articles and fishing shows have been produced about the legendary striped marlin fishery off the banks surrounding the island. In recent years more focus and effort has been put into developing the very good blue and black marlin fishery. Striped marlin average 150 to 200 lb and most blue and black marlin start around 400 lbs with much larger fish released or lost every year on light tackle.

With 3 mayor currents such as the Crownwell, the Panama and the Humboldt all meeting in the Archipelago. As a result the waters are rich with nutrients and very fertile with fish. Some of the best striped marlin fishing known to man is found in the waters surrounding the islands.
Large concentrations of slimy mackerel come to feed on the banks which in turn attract predators such as marlin, tuna, wahoo, dorado, dolphins, whales, sea lions, birds, sharks and orcas. While you fish the waters you will more than likely be charmed by a show of the vast wildlife that concentrates to feed here.
Light tackle fishing, fly fishing and spinning tackle are all part of the fun gear you can expect to use here. Most days there are plenty of big eye tuna and bonito that are fun to fish and an alternative to marlin. The bottom fishing is also phenomenal with plenty of varieties grouper, jacks and snappers to be caught jigging or baiting.
Galapagos is a true year round striped marlin destination. However best months to target blue, black and striped marlin are December to April when seas are warmest and calmest.
