How the Galapagos Marlin Fishery Started:

It all started in 1993 while Braden Escobar was attending Louisiana State University. During the summers off from school Braden returned to Ecuador to guide fishing and hunting trips in Ecuador and Peru. He formed Andean Outdoor Outfitters at the time which provided sportsmen several SCI record on South American game. By 1997 he began to lead the fight to open the Galapagos Islands to hunting and fishing. The archipelago was highly influenced by environmental organizations that did not care to help the locals find alternatives to survive by sportfishing and hunting. Braden talked to the local fishermen and spent years promoting the benefits that a catch and release fishery would bring to the local economy. In 2001 he founded Ecuagringo S.A which began the first charter fishing operation in Santa Cruz, Galapagos. Sportfishing was not regulated at the time and therefore there was no law against it. Environmental activist started a long and despicable fight to discredit and stop Ecuagringo's operation. Finally in 2007, the pressure mounted by the locals and fishermen forced Galapagos National Park to cave in. The first vivencial fishing permits were issued. From this point on there has been no turning back, Ecuagringo has flourished into the premier outfitters in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.
